$5,000-9,000
#001 SNOW WHITE AND RABBITS COURVOISIER SET-UP Image

When Walt Disney made the momentous decision to produce his first full-length animated feature, he knew the character of Snow White herself was central to its success. Her warmth, beauty, and innocence must capture the audience’s heart from her first moments on the screen or the film would fail. He charged his finest animators with her creation, and their astonishing success is evident in this charming set-up as she meets the Dwarfs for the first time after having awakened in their beds. As lovely as a cameo, her full hand-inked image, which includes the quilt, is 5-3/4″. The inquisitive little hand-inked rabbits appeared in the forest scene after Snow White’s terrifying flight and have been trimmed and applied to the cel of the quilt. The set-up is 6 x 6-3/4″, with distinctive Courvoisier decorative paper and airbrush background, hand-lettered mat, and label. Disney, 1937.

No stranger to hard work, the princess doesn’t hesitate to engage the help of the animals when she undertakes to clean the cottage from top to bottom so the children will let her stay when they return. Here she holds her broom outside the cottage and encourages a small bird fledgling to her finger and encourages it to whistle while they work. Snow White is 5-1/2″, rendered in black and red pencil on a 16-field sheet, with production stamp, by Grim Natwick. It was Grim, creator of Betty Boop, whom Walt entrusted with overall responsibility for the animation of the princess. Disney, 1937.

Doc, as the mine’s supervisor and in charge of grading the jewels, gives the perfect diamond his seal of approval, as Dopey supervises the supervisor. At the time of Snow White, groups were divided into units for story, animation, layout, and so forth. The Unit A stamp indicates that these sequential drawings, numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4, defined the placement of the characters in the scene, and they are not only very special, but very rare. They are rendered in black and brown pencil with red and blue frame lines on 12-field sheets, with production, scene, and sequence notations. Disney, 1937.
