#024 ANIMATION DRAWINGS (6) of JIMINY CRICKET TRYING TO SLEEP

$1,200-1,800

It’s been a long and satisfying day. The entire Geppetto household, including a stray cricket seeking warmth and quiet, has bedded down to sleep. But quiet is relative. Jiminy has just found a comfy spot when the workshop is filled with the nighttime din of Geppetto’s menagerie of clocks, sand crashing through the hourglass, and a veritable symphony of snoring. It’s more than a guy can take, and Jiminy’s reactions are caught for all time in this brilliant series of six sequential drawings by the talented pencil of Ward Kimball. It was Ward, and Ward alone, to whom Walt gave the assignment of Jiminy’s animation and the formidable job of transforming him from a mere bug into one of animation’s most enduring characters. Rendered in black, blue, and red pencil on matching 12-field sheets Jiminy’s images range from 3-1/2” to 3-3/8”, each more wonderful than the last. Disney, 1940
