#001 SIGNED DRAWING of MICKEY MOUSE by WALT DISNEY

$3,000-6,000

From his beginnings in Kansas City, Missouri, to his stature at the end of his life as one of the 20th Century’s most celebrated and influential people, Walt Disney’s career not only spanned but virtually defined animation’s golden age almost single-handedly. Even before the debut of Mickey, Walt had stopped drawing, turning over the task to his staff of artists and devoting himself to the creative and administrative work he could leave to no one else, and the sketchiness of his drawings is generally definitive. But not always. This exceptional drawing was likely done for someone Walt knew personally. It is addressed simply to Tom, signed and dated 1943, and forgoes his standard Best Wishes, indicating the informality of a known relationship. It is also drawn with considerably more care than usual, with a preliminary pencil sketch underlying the finished ink, though Mickey’s features and their placement are as uniquely Walt’s as his signature. The drawing is on one half of an 8-1/2 x 11” sheet torn the short way. The signature and drawing were unquestionably done with the same pen and ink at the same time and by the same hand, and the drawing has been authenticated by the Studio. Walt will always be thought of as the creator of his famous characters, and a sketch by his hand has a depth of meaning difficult to describe. This one has an additional sense of personal warmth that is almost tangible. 1943.
