The “lost" bed-building sequence, in which the Dwarfs make a bed as a surprise gift for Snow White, who of course slept in theirs, has become almost as well known as if had actually appeared in the film. A delightful episode, filled with the same warmth and humor as the rest of the film, it underwent extensive pre-production work but was eventually eliminated from the final script because Walt didn’t feel it sufficiently advanced the story. The inventiveness of the Dwarfs, to say nothing of those gifted gagsters who inhabited the Disney Studio, is on full display on this rare sheet as the Dwarfs devise no less than three problem-solving innovations—making wooden pegs, drilling holes, and a buzz saw run on Dwarf power. The sketches are rendered in black pencil on a 12-field sheet. The reason they are so good is they are the work of Phil Duncan, who went on to work as an animator on such films as Dumbo, Alice, and Cinderella. Disney, 1937
