The bombastic old reprobate takes the bows, and all of the credit, as the audience pelts the stage with money after Pinocchio finishes his number on stage. The image is a towering 7-1/8" rendered in black, red, and green pencil on a 16-field sheet, with production stamp. The dramatic shadow is cast by the footlights, indicated at Stromboli's feet. The drawing is by Bill Tytla, the most intense of the great Disney animators. From the power of Chernabog to the innocence of Dumbo, his range was terrific, and probably no other animator ever captured the gamut of emotions he was able to pull out of himself and put on paper. Disney, 1940.
