Introducing a gopher as a handyman to help get Pooh unstuck from Rabbit’s front door was Walt’s idea. He is the only character who didn’t originate with Milne, a fact he acknowledges himself by announcing “I’m not in the book y’know.” Which is very funny. Here he pops up right under Pooh’s nose with his lunchbox, causing the honey deficient bear to intone “A lunch box!” “Sure is. I’m working the swing shift, y’know. Time for my midnight snack. Say, ain’t you that stuck up bear?” This Is the moment, and it is ideal. Gopher and his neatly packed lunch box is 5-1/2 x 3-5/8” on a 7 x 6” cel. The key master giclée background is the final touch. Disney, 1966.
